Why you Don’t Want to Drink Water and How to Change that Thought
A lot of people don’t want to drink water. Your body is about 60% water and needs water to survive. After about 3 days without water, the body systems start to shut down. Water is essential so why are you not drinking it?
Common Reasons Why You Don’t Drink Your Water
Water is Boring or I hate the Taste
If you are not drinking enough water it may be because you think it’s boring or that you hate it. There are so many clients that say they would rather drink something else. The good thing is that you can.
You can flavor your water in many different ways to still get water in. Water doesn’t have to be boring. If you are not including a bunch of sugar in your coffee and tea then that counts as water as well. You also get water from fruits and vegetables. Water is in stews and soups. You may be getting in water without realizing it.
Water is a Gimmick to Make Money
Some people say it is a way to sell more bottles of water. You are right because most marketing is trying to sell you something you need or think you need. You don’t need the water in a bottle but you do need water in your body whatever way you may want to get it. You can get your water from the tap or use a water filter on the tap if you think your water is not the best quality instead of getting bottled water.
Urinary or Pelvic Floor Issues
Another reason people don’t drink water is urinary or pelvic floor issues. Yep, had those issues as well. The important thing is to get enough water for you. Even if you have conditions that are impacted by how much fluid you take in, you can assess how much water you need.
I Forget to Drink Water
What I hear the most is that you forget to drink water. I know you have a very busy life. The key here is to set up some habits that help remind you to drink water. Carry a water bottle with you. Some water bottles even have amounts or time of day to drink listed on them. There are also reminders and apps that you can use on your phone to remember to drink water.
Why You Need to Drink Water
Water is important for the movement of fluids in your body. It moves hormones, toxins, blood, etc to places they need to be to allow your body to process and eliminate. That is why you should have a little more water when you are actively losing weight so the toxins released from the fat you lose can be transported to the liver and processed out of the body.
You are an individual and will need different amounts of water than someone else. Especially if you are getting water from your food, you may not need to drink as much for your body weight.

How to Check if You are Getting Enough Water
It is easy to check if you are getting enough water. If your urine is clear and slightly yellow you are good to go. Urine that is dark yellow in color means you need to drink a little more. Start with one more glass of water. Urine that is clear with no yellow means you can hold off a little while before your next drink.
The important thing to remember is that you are unique and your water needs are different from another person. Follow what feels good for your body.
Change Your Thoughts About Water
Let’s look at your thoughts and give you new thoughts that will help you if you choose to drink more water.
Boring Water to Body Needs It
If you believe water is boring then try to get a new thought about water. It has to be something you believe and helps you to drink water. For example, it can be as simple as “my pee is dark yellow today my body will feel better with a glass of water.” Maybe it’s, “I like water with lemon in it.” What about water with flavored BCAAs to help protein creation in your body. You can say, “I got my tea in today and it counts.” Remember the caffeine in teas and coffee can have a small diuretic effect and push more water out so continue to look at your urine color if you are only drinking caffeinated beverages. If that is your only source then try a flavoring in water to get more water in if there are signs you need more water.
Gimmick to What is Best for My Body
Marketing by big companies can make you feel like things are a gimmick. You can’t change companies’ marketing. If it is a gimmick you don’t need to buy into the gimmick. Try out for yourself how you feel when you drink more water. The easiest way to know is to experiment yourself. Be curious instead of fighting or resisting what the big companies say. Everyone is unique and you may be getting enough water. You can test how much water you need without buying bottled or flavored waters.
Issues to Tracking for an Informed Decision
Yes, when you have urinary or pelvic floor issues you may be told to decrease your water intake. Do it. Listen to your health care professional and do what they say. If you have dark yellow urine then make sure you are tracking how much water you drink so you can discuss with your health care professional if it is enough water. You are probably already tracking how frequently you urinate anyway so just note the color each time as well so you have data to discuss so you and your health professional make an informed decision.
Forget It to Making It a Priority
If you forget water then ask yourself why you are forgetting. Is your health important to you enough to do something to make drinking water a priority? If it is then take action now to add a way to remind yourself to drink water. Yep. Stop right now and add the app or reminder or order the water bottle. Go ahead. Ok.
Did you do it? If not ask yourself why it’s not a priority right now for you. If it is not a priority to drink your water that is fine. Don’t lie to yourself and say it is important to you if it is not. Most importantly don’t beat yourself up about it not being a priority. If it is a priority, then tell yourself it is a priority. “Drinking water is a priority and this app or reminder will help me remember.”
